Cosmetic imperfections such as chips, minor gaps, or serious discoloration can make you feel like you need to cover your smile when you eat, laugh, or speak. In some cases, these cosmetic concerns can even take a toll on your self-confidence.
Matthew A. Turner D.D.S., P.C. can design and place high-quality, natural-looking porcelain veneers to conceal minor flaws and enhance your smile in Kansas City, MO. In just a few weeks, you can have a smile that looks brand new. This simple cosmetic procedure can transform your smile to improve your appearance.
Cosmetic Concerns Addressed with Veneers
Affixed to the front of the teeth, porcelain veneers are made from thin shells of medical-grade ceramic and conceal a wide variety of minor cosmetic imperfections. With custom-made veneers, you can disguise:
- Deep discoloration that will not respond to professional teeth whitening
- Minor damage such as chips or cracks and some fractures
- Small gaps between the teeth, or slightly crooked teeth
- Misshapen or disproportionately sized teeth
Although minor, these blemishes can hinder your confidence and cause you to avoid showing your teeth when you smile.
Are You a Good Candidate for Veneers?
To ensure that veneers are the right choice for you, Dr. Turner will first conduct a complete oral exam to evaluate your candidacy. In general, candidates for veneers must:
- Be in good oral health
- Have a healthy amount of remaining tooth enamel
- Not grind or clench their teeth, since these can cause premature damage to veneers
If you are not ready to commit to veneers, Dr. Turner may recommend dental bonding. As with veneers, bonding can be used to conceal chips, cracks, or minor gaps. However, the procedure is reversible, making it a great option for patients who want to preview how veneers would enhance their smile.
Dr. Turner and his team want every patient to be able to enjoy the benefits of porcelain veneers. We work with CareCredit® to offer flexible financing options to our patients.
The Placement Process
Veneers are typically placed over the course of two appointments.
The first step before any cosmetic procedure is a consultation with Dr. Turner. He will evaluate your oral health and treatment goals to ensure you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. If you have any outstanding oral health issues such as cavities or gum disease, these will need to be treated beforehand. To make this as easy as possible, we offer comprehensive dental care so that you can get the preparatory treatment you need at our office. Once your oral health is restored and you have decided that porcelain veneers are your best option, Dr. Turner can begin prepping your teeth.
Although veneers are thin, they still add a slight amount of bulk to the teeth. For this reason, Dr. Turner will prepare your teeth during your consultation by removing a minuscule amount of tooth enamel. In most cases, he will only need to remove half a millimeter.
After your teeth are prepped, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental lab for the creation of your veneers. We will also include the desired shade, so they can craft veneers that will perfectly match your surrounding teeth.
Because the veneer creation process can take up to two weeks, we will schedule a second appointment for placement. Dr. Turner may attach temporary veneers to protect your teeth and reduce sensitivity during this time.
When your veneers are ready, you will return to our office. Dr. Turner will check to ensure the veneers are the proper shade, size, and shape. Then, he will apply cement to the back of the veneers and place them onto the fronts of your teeth. He will then use a UV light to harden the cement for a permanent placement.
What to Expect after Veneers Placement
You can return to your everyday activities immediately after your veneers are in place. However, while you can eat whatever you like, it is important to note that porcelain veneers are susceptible to chips and cracks, just like your natural teeth.
To keep your veneers looking great for as long as possible, you should take extra precautions and avoid unnecessary pressure on them. Try not to chew on ice cubes, pen caps, or fingernails. With proper care, your porcelain veneers can last up to a decade or more. However, they will likely require replacement at some point.
For patients who have an important upcoming event such as a wedding or graduation, veneers can correct cosmetic issues in only two appointments.
What Are the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers?
Although veneers are one of the many cosmetic dentistry treatments available at our practice, they offer a wide range of benefits not offered by other procedures.
Porcelain veneers can address a wide range of cosmetic imperfections to whiten, straighten, and create a more beautiful smile. With a flawless smile, you can enjoy enhanced confidence, which can have a positive impact on other areas of your life.
Veneers are made from wafer-thin, but remarkably strong medical-grade dental porcelain. This material is stain-resistant, meaning your veneers will not stain over time. Dental porcelain is also designed to closely mimic the shine, color, and texture of natural teeth, so the results remain discreet.
Although they are thin, porcelain veneers can be remarkably durable. Some studies including one by the British Dental Association have found that veneers can last up to 10 years.
Fast Treatment Timeline
For patients who have an important upcoming event such as a wedding or graduation, veneers can correct cosmetic issues in only two appointments. Because the procedure during which veneers are placed is non-surgical, there is virtually no recovery time and patients can typically return to their normal activities the same day.
